About Janice Herold, LCPC NCC

Janice Herold head shot

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and National Board Certified Career Counselor with over twenty years experience in collaborative and integrative career counseling.

I specialize in working with adults who are going through career transition and change. I am also licensed as a personal counselor. My practice serves clients from the metropolitan Washington, DC area which includes Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. My approach is goal oriented and solution-based counseling. I use a collaborative, empathic, integrative and dynamic model. I believe that creating empathy, focusing on strengths, developing new skills, strategies, and coping mechanisms empower my clients to find the missing piece from their career and personal world.

I am a career changer as well. After graduating college I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Central America. I was assigned to be Superintendent of Psychology at the Ministry of Education in Costa Rica. When I returned to the United States I obtained a Masters Degree in Education with a specialty in Spanish. After teaching for several years, I returned to school to attain a Masters Degree in Counseling.

Prior to opening my private practice in Bethesda, I was in charge of the counseling program at the Montgomery County Commission for Women Counseling and Career Center, where I counseled men as well as women, and supervised licensed staff counselors in addition to graduate student interns.

I have traveled, lived and worked with people from all over the world, and I thoroughly enjoy a wide and diverse multicultural clientele. My ideal clients are highly motivated to move forward to accomplish their goals.

What distinguishes me from many other counselors is that I am a National Board Certified Career Counselor as well as a licensed mental health counselor.

Counseling Approach

My role as a counselor is to help individuals identify and reach career as well as personal goals. Sometimes my clients seek career counseling; sometimes they seek personal counseling. Often they seek both. What makes my approach different is that it is an integrative one taking into consideration behavioral changes, symptom relief, self-awareness and the enhancement of well-being at work and in daily life. I individualize my approach based on the unique characteristics and needs of each person.

My theoretical orientation to integrative career counseling encompasses cognitive information theory, social cognitive theory, self-efficacy theory, trait theory, and values based theory.

I use a person-centered approach to develop a positive relationship with my clients. When I do personal counseling, I include elements of reality therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and brief solution-focused therapy in designing interventions and strategies. My style is conversational, warm, direct, empathic and down to earth.

The process of counseling takes time as well as energy. Counseling often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems and significant reductions in feelings of distress, but there are no guarantees of what you will experience. In order for counseling and/or therapy to be most successful you will have to work on issues and strategies we talk about both during our sessions and at home.

Our first few sessions will involve an evaluation of your needs. By the end of the evaluation, I will offer you some first impressions of what our work will include and a plan to follow. My counseling methods vary according to what I feel is appropriate for your specific issue, and I incorporate cognitive restructuring components and goal setting since they have objective measurements of success.

The amount of time my clients spend in a helping or therapeutic relationship with me varies according to the needs of the individual and/or the couple.
